Battery Care

As with any battery, you can get longer lifetime if you keep the power under the designated amp rating, avoid completely discharging the battery, and always fully charge whenever you can. Fortunately these batteries are rated for very high amps, so this means you mainly can focus on depth of discharge for long lifetime.  These LiNMC cells are “deep cycle” meaning that they have the ability to be fully charged and discharged. However the life of the battery will significantly increase if the depth of each discharge is limited to 80% of the rated capacity.

The best way to avoid overdischarge is to get a power meter like a Cycle Analyst that tracks amount of Ah used.  Just make sure you do not go more than 10Ah for a 13Ah battery above, and you will ensure you go no more than 80% depth of discharge.  If your motor kit does not come with a power meter like the Cycle Analyst, you can purchase the Large Screen Cycle Analyst Standalone below.

Comparing LiFePO4 to LiNMC

In spite of the various chemical variations, lithium-ion batteries can generally be separated into two groups: lithium iron phosphate (LFP, LiFePO4) and metal oxides (NMC, NCA, Cobalt, Manganese).  Table 1outlines the differences between LFP and LiNMC chemistry classes on a cell level. Important Note Regarding LiNMC Battery Care

All lithium-ion cells are “deep cycle” meaning that they have the ability to be fully charged and discharged. The life of the battery will significantly increase if the depth of each discharge is limited to 80% of the rated capacity.

Figure 1 (from Battery University) compares the specific energy of lead, nickel- and lithium-based systems.
While NCA is the clear winner by storing more capacity than other systems, this only applies to specific energy. In terms of specific power and thermal stability, Li-manganese and Li-phosphate are superior. Li-titanate may have low capacity but this chemistry outlives most other secondary batteries in terms of life span. It has also the best cold temperature performance. As we move towards electric powertrains, safety and cycle life are becoming more important than capacity alone.
