Ebike Maintenance Tips for Spring

Spring has arrived, the time we’ve all been waiting for after a long boring winter! Before your first ride, it’s important to make sure your ebike has been properly maintained and is in a safe condition to ride. Below are a few tips to keep in mind to ensure you are safe and your electric bike is ready to ride.

Basic Maintenance:

1. Make sure battery is fully charged – Different chemistries require different maintenance, but all chemistries should have been charged at least once a month over winter.



2. No noticeable corrosion, physical damage, water damage, cracking or bad insulation.



3. Check all connections to make sure they are still tight and undamaged from the harsh winter.



4. Check your spokes. Even sitting unused, bicycle spokes can loosen with time. Tightening spokes is regular maintenance, but expect them to be extra loose after sitting all winter. Loose spokes WILL break, so it’s very important to keep your spokes tight….it will save you much work and frustration later.



5. Check for loose cables and tighten them to frame if necessary. Loose wires can get snagged.





Every spring we get an inrush of customers with battery issues that could be avoided, so we hope this knowledge saves you some money. There’s a common misunderstanding that you can store your batteries for winter and forget about them until Spring, but that is NOT the case at all. Keeping your batteries charged to around 75% every few weeks is the best maintenance plan. Batteries DO have a shelf life, and they DO discharge when just sitting. Let them sit too long without a charge, and they will not recover. Keeping your batteries stored in a dry area at room temperature is ideal, as cold temperatures effect stored batteries in a bad way, especially discharged batteries. That being said, it doesn’t make much sense to replace batteries just before winter…..wait until Spring to get the most out of your investment. Always store your bike at room temperature if possible and you’ll avoid some extra work in spring. If your ebike has been stored outside for the winter months, you may have to do some repairs before getting back on the road. Between sun-rot, wet conditions and cold weather, you may find corrosion, cracked or damaged wiring, etc. Most of these issues can be fixed, but rust inside the motor is a very bad thing. If you suspect there’s rust building inside your motor, have it checked out immediately. Rust can be dealt with in the early stages, but if you let it go long enough it can cause permanent damage to your motor’s windings and magnets, eventually causing it to fail.



When we store our ebikes for winter, it’s best to store them out of the way of foot traffic. A common problem is folks snagging wires when walking by, and most don’t notice until they pull it out in spring and it doesn’t work. Connectors can become disconnected, and wires broken. To assure your electric bike is ready to ride, make sure all plugs are in good condition and are making solid contact with their mates. Check the plugs for corrosion, and wipe away any corrosion you might find on the contacts. Using di-electric grease on the plugs to keep moisture out can prevent corrosion and is recommended.
